The Great North of Scotland Railway

The Great North of Scotland Railway was one of the smaller constituent railways to form part of the LNER
in 1923. It was also the most provincial, with a main line running from Aberdeen to Keith.
This modest network managed to pioneer a surprising number of innovations, including the first widespread
use of the 4-4-0 wheel arrangement in Britain. The GNSR also dubbed itself 'The Royal Railway' due
to the frequent use of its Aboyne station for Balmoral. As well as the Royal Train, the GNSR would carry
frequent messenger traffic when Queen Victoria was at Balmoral.
