The North Eastern Railway was one of the largest constituent companies, and was the only constituent company
to become a complete LNER Area at Grouping.
The NER's wealth was built on freight and especially coal. This coal industry led to the building of some
of the World's first railways, and included the pioneering Stockton & Darlington Railway.
