Charles R. Sacre
Charles Reboul Sacre was born in 1839 and was initially apprenticed to Sturrock. At the very young age of twenty,
Sacre was lucky enough to be appointed to the position of Engineer and Superintendent of the Locomotive and Stores Department
of the Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR) in 1859.
Sacre's locomotives were noted for being very solidly built, and their durability ensured that many survived
into LNER ownership. A particular characteristic of Sacre's, was his use of double frames for locomotives designed
for particularly heavy work.
Between 1859 and 1864, S.W.Johnson served as an assistant to Sacre, before moving north to
Scotland and the North British Railway, and eventually the Midland Railway.
Sacre retired in 1886, and committed suicide in 1889.
