In Richard Hardy's second book 'Railways in the blood' he tells the story of John Betjeman accepting, with alacrity, a late invitation to travel in the old GN director's saloon, attached to the rear of the Scotch Goods, from Finsbury Park (special stop to pick up the party of mainly freight customers) to Peterborough, where JB went to the cathedral to attend evensong. Then came dinner in the GN Hotel and a footplate ride back to KX 'to his great and obvious pleasure' on a Deltic, accompanied by Chief Inspector Fred Hart. How stylish is that?
