I'm looking for a GOOD casting or turning to represent the chimney types fitted to these locos as built to GN load gauge, i.e, chimney approx 1' 7" height above smokebox top. It must be a good clean, undistorted item if cast, with a convincing representation of the flare of the chimney and the shape of the typical GN cap. I believe DMR do a Thompson O1 chimney which would be just about spot-on if it is a really good representation, as it ought to be in brass at £4.50 apiece  :!: , but I haven't seen one at first hand.
Can anybody vouch for the quality of the DMR item, or far better suggest a definitely really good CHEAPER alternative please?

Hi Graeme,

I have a DMR K1 kit in the cupboard and it has a very nice turned brass chimney. Also what about the B1/K1 chimney that Dave Bradwell does? That is definitely lost wax brass and very nice. Come to think of it John Redrup (aka London Road Models) does a number of GN kits including a K2. He has sold me separate castings in the past but you have to enquire.

Cheers...Morgan

Thanks Morgan,

I think John Redrup may be a good bet. I'm afraid the B1/K1 chimneys are too short for my foolishly pedantic requirements in this case, approx 1' 4" I believe rather than the ideal 1' 7 1/2". Also, although some chimney drawings I was looking at in John Crawley's GN book implied that the 1' 7 1/2" chimney was fitted to what became LNER Q2 class 0-8-0 (GN 'K2'), I now find that those locos had 1' 11 1/4" chimneys even in LNER days, only the fat-boilered Gresley rebuild (Q3) had the shorter chimney. Maybe the reference to GN class 'K2' was an error in the book, those 0-8-2T GN locos (LNER R1/R2?, GNR L1/L2?) built to Metropolitan gauge seem more plausible recipients for the shorter chimney. The references to LNER K2 mogul, the large-boilered atlantics and the 2-8-0s, all in original GN form rather than any cut-down to LNER gauge, are still valid for the chimney I have in mind.
Whatever I choose, it would of course be nice to see before I buy, or to buy based on such glowing independant recommendation as to make personal inspection un-necessary.

Graeme

Thanks Bill,

I'd be happier if he were at Doncaster this weekend, I fear Watford is a bit too far from here, the Mouth of the Humber.

Just for information, 247 Developments turned up trumps with a 1' 7 1/2" GN Chimney in w/m for £2. It is listed as for C1 or J6, although it cannot be universally right for both - it depends on the period for the J6.

Added 18/2/10: I forgot to say that although the DMR stand was present, the DMR O1 chimney wasn't available at Doncaster show, and unless Mr R has some back at base that he failed to pack for his show stand, then there may not be any more to come either. Apparently his "brass turnings man" has decided to call it a day.......

Hi Graeme,

Good to hear that you've sourced a chimney but I've got to ask, whats it for?
