There is a similar situation in most States of Australia, with pensioner concession-card holders being entitled to one or two free train trips a year, with the rest at a concessional rate.
In fact, the Canberra to Sydney rail service is now largely dependent on concession-card holders for its very existence.
This is fine, but as boomer myself (63 and still working) I find the attitude and manners of some of the 'grey nomads' a bit hard to take - for example, the overweening assertion of 'entitlement', highly assertive use of walking frames and scooters, a certain overall loudness and a kind of forced jolliness at all times.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not at all in favour of us oldies creeping around meekly and mildy (we have to stand up for ourselves, no one else will), but at times I am depreessd at how our generation is turning out in its 'golden years' and somewhat worried about the example we are setting, and with what consequences.
