I have just found an old newspaper( Daily Express 1950s, the last digit is torn off the date 195?) in a house I am helping to renovate....There is a prominent photo on the front page of an A4? light engine on its side outside of what could be Wood Green tunnesl. Can any of you knowledgeable folks throw any light on this accident?
Apologies for being so vague, the paper was in very poor condition .........

Many thanks
Marx

Did the W1 end up on its side when it derailed on points?

The W1 derailment was at Peterborough!

I will consult my library and try and come up with an answer

Could it be Welwyn, 7th Jan 1957 with 60520?

The only light engine on its side that springs to mind is the L1 which got tipped over as a result of the rear end collision at Hitchin South in November 1958. Step forward my old mate the tired signalman :) No tunnels, though

'Fraid not. Nearest tunnel would be about 4 miles away at Welwyn North.

Photo here of the 60700 derailment at Peterborough 1.9.55

www.westwoodworks.net/HowItWas/TheFire ... /index.htm

from various reports - 60700 derailed a few yards beyond the facing points of Westwood Junction due to a complete fracture of the right frame plate of th engine's bogie. The loco tipped on its left hand side under the arches of Westwood Bridge. Most of the coaches remained upright.

Presumably the coaches were towed away fairly swiftly and from subsequent photos it could therefore be assumed it was a light engine.

The line was open again by the following morning.

Need the Daily Express photo for comparison.

cut and paste then coboman, cut and paste - the answer to most things I find.

Judging by the above photo 60700 tipped over some distance from the bridge - hardly against the arches is it? The reports a touch inaccurate then....

Didn't 60700 demolish the 'box steps?

Close. Very close. Too close in fact!

Fascinating - the 'box steps were undamaged. Still, I hope the railway paid for the bobby's new underpants.
