A New Book on the D49s.

Post by Darwin4975 »

Recently out from Great Northern Books is Peter Tuffrey's "Gresley's D49s." In the standard A4 format, hardback with dust-wrapper, this is a pictorial record of the class. Almost every D49 is shown, in some cases with 3 pictures. The author has done a good job in finding images of this rather un-photographed class including a fair number that I have not seen before. There is a good Introduction in which the history of poppet valve gear is described and the picture captions provide additional information.
Pages 1-36 illustrate members of the class in LNER livery and this is followed by 5 pages showing the 1946 renumbering. The remainder of the book, pages 42-143 deals with all but three (Nos 62721/30/46) of these 4-4-0s in BR days. Some of the best photographs are given full page treatment and there are several colour pictures.
Reproduction is generally very good on high quality glossy paper with no badly cropped images seen. At £25 this represents good value for money.
Copies can be ordered directly from gnbooks.co.uk where you will also find sister volumes dealing with the B1s and the B17s, as well as other publications by the same author.
