Hi,
I have not seen a photograph of a V1/3 with goods wagons etc. I know what they were designed for but does anyone have a shot?

Thanking you all in advance.

Steve

Didn't take a photo but in the latter steam days York men came with a V tanky to Skelton Yard and worked our unfitted freight forward to Doncaster We had worked from Teesside with a class H load (or class 8 depending how modern you are)using an Austerity and normally on this turn worked a load of ORE back to West Hartlepool that was worked in by a LMS Garrett.

In the WJV Anderson album Scottish Steam there is a good October 1961 colour photo of 67620 passing Craigentinny with a local trip working, hauling a van and a brake van with an open wagon at the rear (!) I can't remember ever seeing a goods working without the brake van being at the rear in the Edinburgh area.

In the Oakwood Press book on the Edinburgh Suburban and South Side Railway there is a picture of 2929 at Newington on 25th July 1937 with an out-of-gauge load conveying a large stator en route from Parsons of Newcastle to Glasgow Corporation. In that same book there is another picture of 67617 returning to Duddingston coupled ahead of an NBR J36 on a goods train to minimise line occupancy after the V1 had done a banking turn. Yet another picture in the same book shows 67620 working the 'Sub goods' between Haymarket and Niddrie, a duty which was taken over by the 2-6-2Ts after they had been displaced on passenger work by the coming of the DMUs. On this duty they replaced NBR class N15 0-6-2T 69220 which had been on the same job regularly since 1924 and had now been been withdrawn.

Incidentally N15 69220 which was well known to me a a trainspotter seems to have been particularly elusive to photogrpahers - I have never seen a picture of it.

Hi,

I thank you both for (a) posting a reply and (b) your recollections and reference to photographs. My friends and I have many books and magazines but nobody had seen a V1/3 with a goods working. This all came about when my Bachmann model arrived and I loaded it up with goods wagons. The comment immediately came forth, “never seen that”?

Steve

Good Lad for sticking to your guns.
Just because someone maybe has never seen something done dosn't mean it's never done. A loco may have failed and a V is the only engine in steam available then a shed foreman would 'pinch' it.
Once on Stockton station pilot with an L1 either 7754/9/64 or 66 we only had four of them a K1 went through towards York with a class b--(H or 8) depends on your era. half an hour later the station master came , would we go to Eaglescliffe and bank the K1 up Picton bank-I bet some people have never seen that done either.
Incidently a friend has one of the 00 gauge Bachmann pacifics A1 or A2 and the local know all in his club told him to take the front coupling off the engine as they never used them in real life!!! I can remember in the 50s while working a freight from Low Fell to Teesside looking up at a main line train going towards Newcastle pulling the Pullman tank first. The train engine had failed at Durham-good job his front coupling hadn't been taked off.
Now my GWR-(spit)- Great Bear I use in the Berry Wiggins sidings to steam heat the tar wagons..........
I wish Bachmann did an 0 gauge model of a V tanky or even an L1.
happy modelling......Jim Brodie.

Jim,

I thank you for your words of support.

I admit to being quite jealous of chaps that witnessed the Eastern Region and their steam. I was living near Warrington in 1967 & 68 and mostly witnessed LMS, WD and some standard class loco’s such as 9F and all in appalling condition. I was an avid train spotter at 11 years old and was very frustrated at not seeing my beloved LNER heritage loco’s and stock but I did see the Flying Scotsman and many B1’s. My friend got the latest L1 model in OO and its well done for a RTR model.

I much enjoyed reading about your experiences. My friends gave me hell because (a) they are LMS people (my least favorite company of the big four.. .it’s a rivalry still brewing today & much like Ford VS Holden in Aussie) and (b) I base all my modeling on photographic evidence to which I had none to support my contention that it was, “impossible they didn’t work goods at some time”. Anyway it’s all fun to talk about with the Forum.

Our club has an “O” scale line and I agree it would be fabulous to see a V in this size.

Regards

Hi Colleagues,

Last Saturday I managed to purchase 12 British Railway Illustrated magazines for a few dollars. I managed to get three parts of a series on eastern/LNER sheds and two parts of a story about the P2 which was great. There are even photos of V1’s but alas still nothing with goods.

I’m a patient person though.

Hi People,

I’m still on my search for those photos of a V1 with goods wagons. Still nothing yet, so I have put a link to my own humble Bachmann V1 with some old Hornby Gresley coaches I am in the process of “doing up”. I’ll use Buckjumper’s excellent work as a benchmark… wow lots of work to do.

I have a couple of photos, circa 1963, showing V3s on short parcels trains at Blyth and on the Avenue branch. Do they count?

One of them is just a MkI BG plus brake van.

Hi BlythStationLad,

You bet they do, given I've never seen them with anything else but passenger or driving light.

Much appreciated.

HI V3Man,

I thank you for the link, and yes there it is.

I’m happy to announce I found a shot in the October edition of Steam Days, page 592 (funny page number system). A nice V3 67620 shunting box vans at Newcastle Central.

I’m going to make another rake of goods with my V1 today and wait in ambush.

Thanks people.

Steve
