That's exactly how I got my 60100 Spearmint plus doing a tender swap. A bit of ingenuity will get you what you want.

That's a very nice result Allan.
I am hoping that the ease of removal of the American paraphernalia is the point I am trying to illustrate for others who may be reluctant. Just because Hornby has at least temporarily let us down, doesn't mean we can't have LNER liveried A3s if we want them!
Right now there is a USA Scotsman set minus observation car for sale on eBay at £84.99 + £5.25 postage. I bought 2 from the same dealer who waived the postage charges, then I sold the 2 water tenders for £52 and £48 respectively on eBay. After eBay and Paypal fees I ended up with 2 A3s each costing around £40 - cheap as chips!

Or of course you can do as I did and modify the Scotsman tender to get it correct for the 1928-35 period.
If you are clever you can also remove the 'dome' and replace with an alternative!

How did you find removal of the banjo dome and replacement further forward with a round dome? (Filling, colour matching etc?).

If you are very careful the banjo dome will come off without leaving any marks and then one can replace it with a round one in the right place. The boiler band lining appears to have been put on before the dome is affixed so if any touching in is required I find that Precision P751 is the best match.

It seems even back then they thought they could remove the connecting rods for long moves to exhibitions and no-one would notice

I may be wrong, but is'n't it something to do with the pressure build up in the cylinders, for the reason of taking off the connecting rods.

Ay up!
If the drain cocks stick closed and water gets in there - carnage. Plus not compressing air to be expelled through the chimney makes life easier for the engine doing the dragging.

Sorry to disappoint you folks but the likely reason for removing the rods was to make manhandling easier. I am sure they would be replaced once the locomotive had been placed in its static display location. It looks as if the site was restricted so mechanical propelling was out.

Neither Mallard or Green Arrow have had theirs replaced from the trip to Barrow Hill
