Maybe the preserved railways could take a leaf from your book? The replacement of lineside grass with green paint might allow them to keep running steam-hauled services during periods of drought...

While a couple of very rainy days didn't do much good for Eastern Scotland and low lying parts of England's East Midlands, they certainly did wonders for my modelling progress, so I can now cross off the making (if not the final decoration) of the the necessary "over line" structures from my portable layout "to do" list. Tunnel portals, based on the West end of Withcall tunnel, as seen by a man with double vision, are the latest addition.

That patent-pending low fire-risk green paint couldn't remain forever. A basic cover of Gaugemaster grass mat has now taken its place, most of the facings for the platform edges have been built, the platform surfaces have been brought up to a more reasonable height and they've been given a basic undercoat of dark grey along with much of the station yard. I'm trying out some card strips (too pale of course) to test the appearance of platform edging stones of a suitable width (I may make the final ones narrower), and further pieces of card as a mock up of a foot crossing for passengers. Final arrangements in that area depend on how much space I can find for a buffer stop at the end of the short spur of track that currently directs any errant train straight up the platform ramp!

After finishing off the platform edges, reducing the width of the edge slabs, finalising the geometry of the foot crossing, making some suitable GN buffer stops, trimming and loosely fitting some brick paving around the station building, as well as offering up some previously used fencing to the rear of one of the platforms, I decided to put the whole scenic section together briefly to get an overall look at things so far, this afternoon.

Nothing but U1s of course, all either working passenger trains, or in pairs on the front of a long mineral train with a third pushing, exactly like the real thing. They were all over Lincolnshire you know.
