Add on bits for RTR locos
Since some one asked whether I could make bit to convert RTR locos into something else, I've done this:-
If I don't find anything wrong with it it will go for printing this weekend, price is likely to be about £50.

Rather smart that - very convincing. Looking forward to seeing the test print.
Re: Add on bits for RTR locos
Hi Bill,
Those look very promising! Are you looking to sell as 3D prints or use the prints as masters for casting?

It's rather amazing what can be done with a computer these days, but tell me, what's wrong with the Bachmann 04?

Re: Add on bits for RTR locos
There's nothing wrong with it: what this part does is give you another variant of the O4 class (O4/5).

Sell them as prints -- I just can't get the handrails to cast.Atso wrote:Those look very promising! Are you looking to sell as 3D prints or use the prints as masters for casting?

Is this a new boiler/smokebox or cab as well ? I presume a simple conversion of the Bachmann O4 ?

Re: Add on bits for RTR locos
It's a complete unit that is a direct replacement for the backman boiler and cab. It should just screw into the Bachman footplate, but because this boiler is longer than the original and Backmann but the fixing hole towards the back of the smokebox a hole will have to be drilled in the cast footplate.mick b wrote:Bill

It's a pity a conversion to a Thompson rebuild as O-1 is a bit too complex (?). The O-4 didn't get into East Anglia beyond March, but the O-1 was recorded as far east as Lowestoft.

Re: Add on bits for RTR locos
Any idea when the last O4/5 was withdrawn?
Re: Add on bits for RTR locos
Hi David,
The green book says the O4/5 diagram was deleted in December 1959.
Reading further the actual dates are
63745 - withdrawn 4/1959
63851 - withdrawn 4/1959
Not quite your time frame but "it's your train set"
For completeness the rebuilds were
63579 - rebuilt to O1 in 3/1948
63589 - rebuilt to O1 in 4/1949
63628 - rebuilt to O4/8 in 2/1958
63705 - rebuilt to O4/7 in 12/1947
63788 - rebuilt to O4/8 in 3/1957
63816 - rebuilt to O4/8 in 12/1955
Cheers....Morgan

Re: Add on bits for RTR locos
Hello Bill
If a perfect drop-on / screw-on fit is achievable in practice, £50 doesn't sound too bad. Skinflints like me could even "ring the changes" on a single O4 platform from time to time, never getting bored with one body style!
(Original, earlier part of this message subsequently deleted when I realised that I might be mixing-up parts O4/5 and O4/7 )

Re: Add on bits for RTR locos
An 04/5 conversion for £50 sounds great to me.
Is an 04/7 or 04/8 kit possible for £50 each?
Because then, I would be a really happy bunny.
