The LNER Encyclopedia

The first issue of this was seen in my local Sainsbury today. You know the sort of thing, minimal magazine, with a model attached. First issue is £2.99 and features a OO scale model of Mallard.

OK, purists will find fault, but come on, it is only £2.99. So a few photos of the Streak. Please bear in mind

Too many ideas, and not enough time/money to put them all into action. I couldn't tell from your photo's, but is the loco moulded one piece onto the plinth?

The leading bogie dosen't seem to sit on the track, but I suppose that could be very easily sorted. There's an odd mould line between the casing doors, but everything else is just fantastic

The model is fixed to the plinth with 4 tiny screws. Here it is off of the base. Again sorry for the lens distortion (corrected on the tender image). Remember this is a static model, the wheels being fixed.
Note the brake rodding!!!!

The Mallard model looks very much as though it has been based on the current Hornby model - on the web-site the front end view even suggests the buffer beam join line......

I hope they haven't sold out at the local WH Smiths tomorrow - got to be worth a flutter!

Looking back at the web-site it refers to the models as being die-cast. Are they metal or plastic?

Plastic, although I suspect metal tyres have been fitted to the wheels.

Interesting - must go and get one. Could this be a source of cheap tender parts? (with apologies to those who have gone to the trouble to resin cast some).

I just wonder how easy it would be to fit the loco body to a current Hornby L/D A4 chassis and the tender body to a spare underframe?

It doesn't look as if WH Smiths are going to stock it in the Leicestershire area, and I've drawn a blank at the large local Sainsburys too.

Any suggestions anyone?

Our WH Smiths has none, Sainsbury's has not been checked and ASDA will be getting a visit this evening

If anybody "in the provinces" has succeeded in getting one off-the-shelf I'd be interested to know. I tried our local independant "Magazine World" today, WHS, and the mags section of Sainsburys but got not a sniff of what I wanted. Is this the tiresomely usual "North of Watford" distribution delay, or have they already been and gone I wonder - or worse still are we "plebs" in the North not thought fit to receive such merchandise????

I'll have a look round 'Vegas tomorrow, my Sainsburys here doesnt have any, Skeggie has a Smiths, Tesco & Morrisons
