Would a SECR brake van have transited Belle Isle on cross London freight workings, via Farringdon?

I would say it's possible. If a GN brake van became defective whilst down south, a SECR brake could have been substituted, I doubt it would have stayed North of the Thames for to long, probably hooked up to the next goods train heading south.

You have to remember that 'Anything' can happen on the railway.

The line (or road) leading off the Down slow line and also the Down main/fast no.1 line outside the north end of Gasworks tunnel (Belle Isle) was called the Down South London Goods line so I presume that hinted at most of the freight or goods traffic traversing that short piece of railway and passing outside Goods And Mineral Junction s/box originated off the Southern Railway.

Don't know about the wagons, but in case anyone is misled the cross-London freights via Faringdon were of course all LNER-hauled. But the through passenger services were SECR-hauled. Discontinued in 1907, which might limit modelling potential.

From my recollection the goods traffic was in steam days thru York Way up mostly coal trains &down the empties, lots of wooden private owners wagons a joy for the modeller, hauled by J52/J50 &(N1 before their transfer North or Scrapping)with the J52's not always condensing fitted, with goods traffic up or down light compared to the coal moved, remembering post nationlisation the L.N.E.R along with the Midland had their own Coal Yards in South London with the Midland having West London Yards also, apart from other inter regional outposts gained by different routes other than thru the Farringdon (Jct).jj

The above picture.

Those two bracket post signals seen in the photograph survived until September 1975 all be it in a slightly modified form with obviously upper quadrant signal arms replacing the original GN somersaults at some stage. The left-hand bracket post signals later on had all miniature arms and the right-hand bracket post had a small mixture of full-size and miniature arms although one or two arms had 'disappeared' by the late 1960s. Those particular signals and others in the immediate area were worked from Goods And Mineral Junction box and were all abolished in the late summer of 1975 when the box was finally closed.

Thus one of Mr Bulleid's 'Coffee pots', 33021, standing alongside Harringay Up Goods signalbox, captioned as 1961. The first four vans visible of its train all look to be LMS design, wonder what brake van was at the rear end? (In David Percival's survey of the KX area 1950s to 1980s.)
