Possible NER Water Crane?

Post by Rlangham »

Beamish has picked up a water crane from Darlington, and told it was ex-NER - can anyone confirm based on the photos here?

It doesn't look like any NER crane I have seen, though I think I have a photo of a similar one on the Cleobury Mortimer & Ditton Priors Railway. The handwheel looks NER though they may have been generic, bought in from contractors. There used to be a one in the middle of some bushes at the east end of Haltwhistle station a few years ago and it may still be there.
At best it may be a cheap & cheerful one from early BR days.

Last October I had a few runs over the N&CR, and although I didn't see a water crane at the east end of Haltwhistle, there was still a crane near the west end of the Carlisle platform there that appeared to be of NER origin. The one at Beamish looks like a column rather than a crane, with a clip halfway up to hold the bag. Did the NER use columns as well as cranes?

No the water crane at the east end of Haltwhistle was long gone, it was just the handwheel remaining on its little iron column. The NER did inherit a few of what could be described as "columns" from the S&DR and I have a photo of one at Waskerley but its copyright.

BTW here is my shot of Deltic 55019 at Thirsk circa 1978 with a lovely water crane in evidence.

BTW when you said it was "too low" that suggests it might have been on a platform....like the one at Market Weighton?

Moi?? The crane I saw can be seen in shots at the Disused Stations site pages for Haltwhistle, but looking at those now I am having doubts as to whether it was of North Eastern origin. All the cranes at Haltwhistle appear to have been mounted on the ground rather than the platforms.

A fine shot of Thirsk with an unmistakable NER crane, and two Warflats and a Warwell in the background. I recall first seeing these in about 1966-67 on Castleman's Corkscrew, bound for the depot at West Moors, I imagine.

It was Rlangham who said it was "too low" in the linked article from Beamish. BTW there are also a couple of Mini cars on the loading dock at Thirsk. Happy days!

It looks like it could be a Midland Column to me remembering photos of similar columns on the Somerset & Dorset. Where the "bag" leather/rubber hose attached directly to what would be the base half of the N.E. "swan neck" column, where the right angle bend is. So I'd suggest that it be used at the colliery instead as even they'd have such items, using an old Lancashire boiler as a header tank beside the shed

Speaking of Beamish and Rowley, I would be interested to know what happened to the ancient S&DR water column at Black Cabin between Waskerley and Parkhead? I checked my photos and I only have a shot of the one at Waskerley shed which a standard one like the Thirsk example.
