William (Bill) Edward Ashmore

Post by SusieC »

I wonder if anyone has any information or photos relating to my grandather William Ashmore? He was born on 24/12/1906 and started work on the railways in Darlington at 14, cleaning the engines. He became a fireman in 1921 and then a driver in 1941, and always told us he used to drive the Flying Scotsman. I know he drove Troop Trains during WW2. He ended his career as a Foreman or Inspector at Darlington, working for LNER until he retired. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the railways and I used to love listening to his many stories. I so wish I had recorded them!
