Train songs I still do are:

Wreck of the Old '97 - Lonnie Donegan
American folk song about a crew being given 'old 97', a known speedster, as against '38', presumably their regular engine, and having started late, they've got to "put her into Danville on time" - with tragic consequences.

City of New Orleans - Arlo Guthrie
Wistful number about a fading America as the train called The City of New Orleans travels its route from Chicago on down the Mississippi to New Orleans.

Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
Not really a 'train' song as such, but with lines like, "I hear the train a-coming, rolling 'round the bend", etc. and references to 'lonesome whistle' and 'fancy dining car', I reckon it's close enough.

Morning all after a late night
How about Johnny Cash's: Hey Porter
Orange blossom special
Casy Jones

Monkees Last train to Clarksville
Rod Stewart Downton train
Doobie Bros Long train running
Jerry Lee Lewis Night train to Memphis
Leadbelly Shorty George (The train taking visitors to a prison)
I'll think of some more when my mind starts working.

My favorite of them all is "City of New Orleans", Sammi Smith did a great version

Great stuff, guys! This should be a muso's forum. Well, not really:)

Funny, though, how train songs are nearly always American. Wonder why the UK didn't generate songs about trains so much. After all, we invented the ruddy things. Mind you, "Pardon me boy, is that the Hatfield Hitchin local" doesn't quite have the same cachet, does it? :)

Has "the Marrakesh Express" gone by yet? (Crosby, Stills and Nash)
Oh well, might as well get "The Slow Train" (Flanders & Swann); always worth catching ("Mow Cop & Scholar Green", etc.).

For more obscure tastes, there are always songs such as "Locomotive Breath" by Jethro Tull

and "Train To Nowhere" by Savoy Brown

Slightly off at a tangent, but a rather acquired taste is "Tramcar To Frankenstein" by The Liverpool Scene.
