MK1 BSO V BSK

Post by Trestrol »

I wonder if anybody can answer me a question. Once mass withdrawals started on MK1s BR kept mainly TSOs in service over SKs. But when it came to BSOs and BSKs the BSKs survived and the BSOs did not. Is this due to the larger luggage space on a BSK as you would have thought BR would want only open carriages. That was what they were building as new at the time as compartment stock was old fashioned by the 70's/80s.

But at the same time BCKs stayed in service with an even smaller van area.

I don't think so. MK1 BSO, BCK and BSK were all built in similar date ranges. There are preserved examples of early MK1s that lasted to the early(very) 1990's. I think it may be down to luggage van size and I know the BCKs lasted well but probably by virtue of them being both classes outweighed there small luggage area.
