Except when it was a Brush type 2, then a 30/0, in the period from original construction in 1958 until re-engined in late 1968, which saw it reclassified as 31/1.
Hatfield Shed is correct...

Even though they were only rated as 'type 2s' they were an all round nice diesel loco to either ride on or to drive.

Hi all, those Brush type 2 D5500-D5519 were hard to track down in East London allocated @Stratford(30A) & after the initial period all were to be found @Ripple Lane TMD with very capable staff(they had to be), working all over the LTS lines+the odd roster on the Tanker Trains running further afield, not sure if they could work with other members of the batch in Multiple(never witnessed),or other later class members, the "Toffee Apple" nickname came
about from the shape of the controller, that more than once got broken off by heavy steam age handling, the D552x onwards initally not the success of later years when fitted with the Mirrlees Engines & causing much heartache with the Sales &Engineering staff of that Company (which they never really got passed) over the affair with the Eastern Region & G.E.traction Departments, dont think the Blackstones in the 08's much loved with their oil throwing abilities both engines may have been more successful in stationary plant installations.jj

When I was a secondman at Kings Cross loco (1974-1975) on rare occasions a beat up scruffy looking blue livered Tinsley 31 would make it's way down to the London area and a part from the loco could have done with a trip through the washer a couple of times the Tinsley class 31s usually had there Spanner boilers removed with Tinsley shed being a freight depot and a concrete block was substituted where the Spanner boiler was to be found which looked strange on going into the engine compartment.

Also on a rare occasion I recall seeing a blue livered GE 31 with 'single line working apparatus' recessed in the left-hand drivers cab door in the GN London area back in the middle 1970s.

And I see according to brdatabase.info D5509 was a 30/1 and then a 31/0 when re-engined. https://www.brdatabase.info/locoqry.php ... &loco=5509
So still a 30 from new until 1968 then a 31 - but differing sub-types.

Never saw the tablet fitted Brush 31 class think 5/6?maybe they were sub shedded @ Grantham, pretty sure they were so fitted for the High Dyke Mineral Traffic from memory, but may have been on Finsbury Park(FP)allocation as home base, now the Tinsley(41A) Brush 2 did come down concrete block fitted in "Green" days also, minus the "D", I suppose out of desperation (last minute)substitute, some of the (few) members that I saw, were also during the winter months!, now that would have been a very cold memorable journey I think, I would have checked the # & if in the knowledge scuttled off to Sheffield Midland for a nice ETH fitted/or Steam Heat Peak,to St Pancras.....jj
