'The Day Continental' and 'The Norfolkman'

Post by karlrestall »

Does anyone have any information on either of these trains? I have the formations but that is about all I have. I have looked through the books that I have here and I have also looked on the internet and all that I have found out is that the ‘Day Continental’ left Liverpool Street Station and travelled to Parkeston. ‘The Norfolkman’ left Liverpool Street and travelled through the Sheringham. Any information such as station stops, timings, and when the service was inaugurated and finished etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Karl,

This has taken a lot of talking to old relatives and is totally anecdotal. It is essentially a best guess from what they have told me, of what they can remember from when they lived in Norfolk.

The norfolkman worked out of Liverpool St, then at Ipswich it was divided between Sheringham and Gt. Yarmouth. I was told that it was divided at Norwich but this seems to be a waste of resource as the train would then have to travel back down to Yarmouth again from Norwich. That is the best guess part. As for stations called at along the way it seems Stratford, Colchester and Chelmsford and Witham as the most likely ones. I Don't know why but most through trains to Norwich seem to stop at Witham.

If you have anymore info on the Day Contiental then i may be able to help more.

Hope this helps
Simon

Norfolkman: my summer 1954 timetable shows the Norfolkman leaving Liverpool St at 0930 and arriving at Sheringham at 1258 (1315 SO) calling at (SX times) Ipswich (1046), Norwich (1140), Wroxham (1207), North Walsham (1219), Gunton (1230 SX), West Runton (1254) and Sheringham (1258), returning at 1608 arriving London at 1955 (2006 SO). There is no mention of a portion for Yarmouth. By summer 1959, it is shown as SX only London (0930), Ipswich (1043) and Norwich (1130), returning at 1745 arriving London at 1945. Again, no mention of Yarmouth.

There was also the Broadsman, in 1954 leaving Sheringham at 0620 and arriving Liverpool Street at 1001, calling at West Runton, Cromer High, Gunton, North Walsham, Worstead, Wroxham, Salhouse, Norwich, Diss, Stowmarket and Ipswich. Returning at 1530 arriving Sheringham at 1857 (1909 SO). No mention of Yarmouth. By 1959 this train started at Melton Constable at 0708 and called at Holt and Weybourne before Sheringham, arriving Liverpool Street at 1045. Returning at 1530 to Sheringham at 1905.

I can't find the Day Continental in the 1954 timetable - it is perhaps referred to as the Day Service, leaving Liverpool Street at 0930 arriving Harwich Parkeston Quay West at 1105. Returning 1935 (1945 Su) and arriving London 2109. By 1959 there were several day services.

Hope this helps. Phew!
