The plan is to replace the HSTs, although the detail is a bit sketchy at present. Whether all will be bi-mode or just a few is not clear. A mixed fleet with 3 different unit types - 91 + Mk IVs, electric IEP and bi-mode IEP will be difficult to diagram effectively

Re: Trains To Be Built In Britain.
Jobs-wise, it's good news but isn't it ironic it takes the Japs to bring loco construction back to where it all started, or am I not allowed to say the J word?

This thread also under General LNER Discussion, to be politically correct you will have to nip that one in the bud!

Be interesting to see whether it is connected to the Bishop Auckland branch and generates any freight traffic?

Thing is will they be as good as the HST? How can you fault something getting on for forty years old , Was cheap to build,Has repayed its costs decades ago. The HST is a great British Rail product. What happens to the other maintenance depots? will they still be used for day to day maintenance or will they build new ones leaveing the old ones with no use. It is good news that the factory is comeing to Newton Aycliffe Pity it wasn't Tyne Yard.

I've just attempted a merge of the two threads.

In the age of carbon footprints it is rather ridiculous to be hauling useless equipment the length of the country. Dead diesels and fuel KX to Edinburgh and then useless electrical gear onwards. How many wasted ton miles does that work out at? I have a radical solution, build coaches and change locos at Edinburgh!
Re: Newton Aycliffe back on the map.
Let's hope that it is more successful than Bombardier's take over of Procor/Charles Roberts or similar operations in Switzerland (Schindler?) which ended in closure,

I'm sorry I do find that word offensive, particularly as I married a Japanese national and lived there for 21 years. Apologies to everyone, but I had to say it.JustinTime wrote:Jobs-wise, it's good news but isn't it ironic it takes the Japs to bring loco construction back to where it all started, or am I not allowed to say the J word?

Well people from County Durham used to be known as "Pit Yakkers" till Thatcher rendered any reference to pits redundant. People from Darlo are known as "Quakers" so I guess they are inbetween the two.
I long for the days when if people "offended" you, you punched them.
