Shed Stabling Arrangements

Post by Pyewipe Junction »

Does anyone know what the general arrangements were for stabling locos at motive power depots?

I am assuming that locos were stabled roughly in the order of their next duties, but this must have been a nightmare to get right at large sheds such as Stratford and York. (Of course, it would have been easier at sheds with roundhouses.) You wouldn't want to find out that you couldn't move your loco because there was a 'dead' one in front of you that wasn't going anywhere!

Also, since most depots had more locos allocated than could fit in the shed(s) am I right that space in the shed(s) was reserved for locos requiring servicing?
