The GNR Stirling G2 0-4-4T Locomotives

GNR Stirling G2 0-4-4T Locomotives

The G2 class was an earlier version of the G1 class, constructed between 1881 and 1885. Ten engines had full height chimneys and worked in the Bradford area. The remaining six engines were fitted with short chimneys and condensers for working the London suburban services. After about 1898, these six engines were also moved to the West Riding. At about this time, both their condensers and short chimneys were removed.

Only six of the original sixteen locomotives survived through to Grouping in 1923. These were allocated numbers 3659, 3682, 3694-6, and 3765, although they never bore their LNER numbers before being withdrawn between 1924 and 1926.
