References & Bibliography: Railways in Britain
The list of British preserved railways are divided according to whether they have a strong LNER
presence.
Preserved Railways with a strong LNER presence
Britain's only double track mainline preserved railway is the home of a number of preserved LNER engines.
The North Norfolk Railway has a strong Great Eastern and Midland & Great Northern flavour, being home to
the sole surviving J15 0-6-0,
and B12 4-6-0, as well as being repsonsible for the
restoration of the sole surviving J21 0-6-0.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates most of the historic Pickering to Whitby line, and is home to a number of
of LNER locomotives (incl. A4 Pacific No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley)
and an impressive rake of Gresley coaches.
The Severn Valley Railway might be located in traditional GWR country, but it is the home base of
A4 Pacific No. 4468 Union of South Africa
The Middleton Railway fills an important gap in the preservation scene by concentrating on the oft-forgotten
industrial locomotives. Their stock list includes one of two surviving
Y7 0-4-0Ts and the only surviving ex-LNER
Sentinel shunter.
The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway (aka "The Middy") has re-opened as a preserved railway, and attempts to recreate scenes
from the neighbouring LNER.
