The GER after Grouping (1923)

After the Grouping in 1923, Liverpool Street's offices were used to house the LNER Southern Area General Manager and his staff.

Gresley continued building GER locomotives, notably increasing the numbers of Hill's N7 0-6-2T locomotives from 22 to 134. He also commissioned Beyer Peacock to build ten more of SD Holden's 4-6-0 B12s. He also made some significant developments with James Holden's Claud Hamilton 4-4-0s and with the B12s. They were re-boilered and fitted with new long travel valves. In each case, the performance was greatly improved even though some thought that the visual appearance was less attractive.
