INDEX TO 00 LOCO MODELLING/CONVERSIONS

Post by 2002EarlMarischal »

I keep finding myself hunting back through threads looking for particular models and this can prove tricky due to the limitations of the search function. The end result is that I end up digressing and delving into fascinating posts and forgetting what I was looking for in the first place! :?

So here's the idea: how about a thread that is an index in itself, and which can be added to over time by those posting details of their handiwork? This is what I mean as an example:

Class
A1/1 - Atlantic 3279 - conversion from Hornby A3 Sandwich with resin parts - loco-vans-brakes-workbench-another-cunn ... s1245.html
A2/2 - mick b - conversion from Bachmann A2 with resin parts - lner-models-t1624s375.html
A2/3 - Atlantic 3279 - conversion from Bachmann A2 with resin parts - [1] loco-vans-brakes-workbench-another-cunn ... 3s825.html- [2] loco-vans-brakes-workbench-another-cunn ... s1140.html
A4 - 2002EarlMarischal - valence removal from Hornby A4 - projects-empire-ex-4472-grey-woodcock-v ... 03s15.html
B2 - Atlantic 3279 - conversion from Bachmann B1 - loco-vans-brakes-workbench-another-cunn ... t2443.html
D20 - mick b - DJH upgrade - lner-models-t1624s135.html
J71 - jwealleans - conversion from Bachmann J72 - on-my-workbench-north-eastern-t937s600.html
K1 - mlgilbert30 - DMR K1 build - on-has-been-on-my-workbench-dmr-k1-t6316s0.html
K4 - Atlantic 3279 - conversion from Bachmann K3 - loco-vans-brakes-workbench-another-cunn ... 3s405.html
L3 - mossie - scratchbuild - br-l3-scratch-build-t6261s0.html
P10 - Atlantic 3279 - conversion from Bachmann V1 - loco-vans-brakes-workbench-another-cunn ... 3s120.html
R1 - mossie - scratchbuild - mossies-lner-r1-scratch-build-t6571.html
W1 - Atlantic 3279 - conversion from Hornby A4 - loco-vans-brakes-workbench-another-cunn ... t2443.html
4-8-2 - Atlantic 3279 - conversion from Hornby A4 - loco-vans-brakes-workbench-another-cunn ... 3s300.html

To update, it would be a simple matter of copying what went before and adding the new index item. To prevent the thread becoming too large, older posts could be deleted as we go along.

I see that at the moment it is not possible to get onto RMWeb but links to that forum or others could be added too.

Any interest :?:

I think that is an excellent idea.

Andy Y has tweeted that RMweb might be running again later tomorrow (Wed 28), so you may be able to add lots more links soon.

Horsetan - would you like to add in the link to your V2 thread on RMWeb - I just can't get onto that site at the moment?

It's taken some time to put the list together as it is, so I would welcome others contributing if they think it is of value.

Hi

Im new to this site, though been lurking for quite a while

I have done some work to a Lima J50, Hornby J83 and, a limited amount, to a Bachmann J72. Currently I've detailed the work on RMWeb, but if anyone is interested i can post these details on here.

Best regards

I applaud the idea, but I don't believe this is the way to do it. You're creating a thread itself which would have to be read or searched as it grows, or are you planning to edit that one post and add entries?

Would it be better to ask Richard if he'd consider putting links back from the locomotives pages for a particular class to examples modelled on this forum?

Alternatively, my RMWeb workbench thread has an index in the very first post and I probably ought to do the same on this one. Perhaps everyone should be encouraged to do that once a thread gets beyond a given number of pages.

Good idea EM. As JW points out a page with links to the modelling content would perhaps be a better way to not lose track of the thread. At one time I offered a photo of each model I completed to Richard to see if he wanted to use it on the relevant locomotive page. IIRC he has used the Raven A2, Sam Fay and M1 0-6-4T. It seems all of these have missed the first go around of the list so here are the links.

Raven A2: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=968
Sam Fay: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1328
M1 0-6-4T: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=855

At the very least this thread should be pinned at the top of the list. Can you do that please Richard?

Cheers....Morgan

What I had in mind was a simple copy and paste into a new post when new index items need to be added in - I would then go back and delete old posts so the latest was always the most up-to-date and there wouldn't be loads of posts to wade through.

I actually don't mind maintaining it if others send me the necessary links.

On the subject of the links themselves, if you follow them you will see that what I have tried to do is take you to the first page of content relating to the model. This could be the first page of a thread or in some cases the 1st, the 23rd, the 42nd etc etc.

If the concept does meet with Richard's approval then it would be most useful pinned to the top as you suggest.

I've a further idea to put into the pot - is it possible to draw up a list as to what names/numbers/liveries a particular RTR model can portray?

I am finding it so difficult to fully assess Hornby A3s, for instance, with the left/right hand drive/banjo or round dome/superheater header/washout plugs/etc differences for names/numbers and which model to buy in the first place!

So for example - we have the Hornby Brown Jack model. We could then have a list of names/numbers it could portray without modification, or with little modification. Under the "Brown Jack" name, we could have a code of some form which tells us what details it has - livery/tender/washout plugs/drive side/etc.

Good idea, bad idea...?

Hornby Brown Jack: I just happen to have one of those
So an example of the features for 60043 would be;

Hornby A3 60043 'Brown Jack' R2966: LH drive, smoke deflectors, double blastpipe, number plate on smokebox strap, bucket seats, banjo dome, 64A shedplate and GN tender in late BR livery

I think she's LHD, the ejector pipe is on the left.
Don't ask me about washout plugs, I know nothing!

I think it's a brilliant idea :D
