Hi. Can anyone inform me of the BR power rating that was applied to the D49/1 class? Many thanks.

tigerkev,

My Observers book of Railway Locomotives (Published 1955 - revised 1960) gives the power classification as 4P. Route availability was classified as 8. I think the whole class was 4P as the D49/1 had Walschaerts outside valve gear and the D49/2 had rotary camshaft gear, the D49/3 comprised locos 62720-4 as built with Lentz oscillating cam poppet valves (From 1938 these locos were rebuilt as D49/1, the D49/4 was a rebuild of the D49/2 but with two inside cylinders of D11 pattern Stephenson gear and piston valves. None of these difference would have altered the basic Power classification.

Hope this helps?

John
