Union of South Africa (Scarborough Spa Express)

Post by richard »

Guess what I saw last Tuesday:

Image

The location is Crossgates on the old Leeds - Selby line.
The driver had slackened off a bit just before passing under the road bridge - hence the lack of smoke. The photo also doesn't show my smile as I heard the chime whistle a few moments earlier :-)

She sounded to be in good knick - like a sewing machine. It has been too long since I've seen a large LNER engine in action...

I also saw Duchess of Sutherland the week before, but my shutter timing was a bit off, so I don't have a well composed picture of it.

I've added the above picture and a new picture of Dominion of Canada by John Massey, to the A4 page

Was that before or after she met a bridge parapet??

Before, but I didn't hear the whole story - only that she'd been "banned" from the route because she'd hit something. I also note that the schedule was changed with a Black 5 taking up the remaining turns.

I remember one of the Duchesses (Hamilton?) doing the York-Harrogate-Leeds loop back in about 1980. Must be a new bridge...

The problem is Network Rail do PW jobs and don't put the things back how they were, the bridge at Battersby is an example of this.

The black 5 looks nice for a difference, and Union fits, so if Bittern was able to take part!!!

And the Duchess looked fine this morning, don't know where it hit!
Just about to go see her back in.

I think the damage was on the left hand side of the loco.
