Obituary - G - GNER

Post by x568wcn »

Great North Eastern Railway

Much loved operator of the East Coast Main Line, through no fault of it’s own, the North Eastern Railway once again passes in to the history books today.

Carrying more than 17.4 million passengers a year and providing 124 services every weekday.

One of the last of the privateers still running on the same network, they have comprehensively updated the fleet, and the stations, and with only two major incidents to their name.

The Proud Blue Red & Gold Livery, has already changed, with Logos removed, the neat red stripe changing to white, and the Fleet numbers moving lower down in large white, which has been happening for some time now!

The last GNER run train, passed through York to Newcastle at 22:38.

Taking its name from the last private company to run the network, whether it is London or Great, the North Eastern Railway has gone, and only 22 days before the 60th Anniversary of it’s forerunner.

We also demise here also, the passing of the Route of the Flying Scotsman.

GNER 01/04/1996 – 09/12/2007

GNER is survived by National Express

Apart from over-bidding for the East Coast franchise, that is.
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?

Now National Express East Coast.
I'd have had it called London National Express Railway.

Bob McKenzie was GNER's Chairman and Sea Containers' Chief Executive; Christopher Garnett ("rather overbid and win than underbid and lose") was high-profile CEO of GNER and Chief Executive of the Rail Division of Sea Containers. As I understand it, there was no meaningful difference between the two companies. GNER did make loadsamoney once upon a time but their already hugely optimistic bid for the East Coast franchise extension was badly affected by the downturn in travel caused by the terrorist attacks on London, by increased energy prices, and by lower compensation payments from Network Rail. There were also concerns about potential revenue abstraction by Open Access operator Grand Central. In the first 14 months of the new franchise period GNER say they were already down by £33M - that is, £2.3M a month, almost £600,000 a week, around £3.5K an hour, or £60 a minute. I don't see how that can be laid at Sea Containers' door. GNER overbid and lost.

Shouldn't this be in the "Railway Chat" section?
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?

I see. So First ScotRail's "Turbostar" 170s are actually spiritual successors to the P2s, then?

It is only a trademark. There was a high profile court case when GNER were up against Marchington's company over the use of the name 'Flying Scotsman' on merchandise.

All corporate shenanigans aside, the Flying Scotsman name, locomotive and train, will live with me for ever. All in agreement say "Aye!".
