O4s on loan before 1923

Post by kudu »

Can anyone please suggest a source for information on the 8K/O4s loaned from the WD to British companies around 1919.I am particularly after dates (month/year) of arrival and departure. This site mentions 40 loaned to the GER (see J20 class), though Baxter (British Locomotive Catalogue 1825-1923) quotes 44. No dates are given. Other recipients of O4s given in Baxter are the Caledonian (50), L&YR (27), LSWR (17), NER (33), and SECR (6), plus the GCR itself (93). There were also those on the LNWR and GWR which were taken into stock and so have more accessible details. I know the SECR passed on its 6 to the LNWR but I don't know whether these were also taken into stock by the LNW.

Any guidance welcomed.

I think Rowledge, HEAVY GOODS ENGINES OF THE WAR DEPARTMENT Volume 1 will give some or all of the information you're looking for. Copies are fairly readily available second hand.

The topic is touched on in Heavy Freight Locomotives of Britain by Denis Griffiths who says those loaned out were recalled by the government in 1921, with sales only recommencing in 1923.

He states, "The real bargain was obtained by the LNER when in 1927 it purchased 100 for only £340 each". He does add that work was required to the fireboxes but still a bargain when unused examples actually sold to the GWR and LNWR in 1919 achieved around £10,000 each.

Don't know if this is of any use, from my book 'The North Eastern Railway in the First World War':
Despite the return of the 50 T1 class locomotives in 1919, the opportunity was taken in 1919 to hire 33 of the ROD Class 2-8-0 locomotives from the Ministry of Transport. 521 in total were built from 1917 onwards, and after the war were put into storage – some of them not seeing war service at all, being built too late to be sent to France or elsewhere where they could be of use. A number were sold, including some which went as far afield as Australia, but there was still a large surplus so they were put up for loan to British railway companies. Eight of these came unused from storage, and another seven came straight from the manufacturers, who were still building them as late as May 1920 despite the war being over, as the contracts were still running for their manufacture. The remaining locomotives came from storage in Surrey, and were locomotives that had served in France. They were all returned in August 1921

Thanks to everyone for their help. I think I'd better get the Rowledge book. It looks from rlangham's quote from his book that no RODs were on loan by the Grouping though the LNWR and GWR had both purchased some outright.

Just to confirm, the details from my book only relate to the NER ones. Not sure where I originally got the information from, may have been the superb ROD book by WT Aves
