I presume you mean the Thompson L1s, not the earlier GCR class (subsequently reclassified L3)?
If so, they were built at Darlington, at North British Loco Ltd. in Glasgow, and at Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns in Newcastle.
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?
