Fish Van (livery)

Possibly should be in Model Rail sub-section, however, I have a couple of old 'fish van' models acquired 2nd hand. They're possibly Triang or Mainline and both are painted in a pale/sky blue with the wording 'Fine Fish' and a fish-head symbol between the 2 words. I picked up somewhere that fish vans were not painted blue so any enlightenment on correct livery for the LNER Grouping period would be very helpful.

Related query - they also have XP in smaller (upper case) letters and is it correct that these letters relate to post Grouping ie BR (which if so, would presume ANY rolling stock so adorned should have the XP removed for LNER era).

Many thanks.

They are old Hornby based on a H&BR van . Have a look at Graeme Kings thread a few pages back for a much nicer upgraded version.

They (fish vans in general) were painted blue, but only from 1963/64 under BR. But this livery will be a typical Hornby makey-uppey

No it isn't. I'm not sure when it started but I'm fairly sure the XP rating was around in the 1930s. That said, I doubt the H&B vans would qualify for it, as it required a minimum 10 foot wheelbase.

Thanks all and accept there has been a bit of artistic license perpetrated by Hornby on unwitting modellers (like me) as well as sheer commercialism - look at their appalling 'Fathers Day' (or some such occasion) wagons they have released in the recent past. However mickb, have gone back 10 pages but can't find the Graeme King thread you refer to. Would be grateful if you could give me some more detail.

Greetings mick b - my 'pages' go up to 38 (nowhere near 50) and I have worked backwards to 25 and can't find the Graeme King thread you mention (maybe it's somewhere between page 12 I worked UP to and page 25 I worked BACKWARDS to).. Any chance of the date of the thread and I'll track it from there.
Thanks, Graeme

Like a lot of us, Graeme posts in a single thread rather than start a new one for each new model. "Atlantic's works" is the thread you need and the H & B vans start here, two posts down.

Many thanks for the link - explains all I probably need to know about 'correcting' Hornby's original RTR errors. (Also explained a bit about forum 'links' that should be helpful in future).
