In the F.A.S Brown book Nigel Gresley Locomotive Engineer, page 156 he describes the coaches as the "reserve 'Coronation' set"
I have always taken this to be the 5th set built as a standby for the streamlined trains and unlettered.

Operationally that would make more sense to me as the 4 service sets would surely be checked and cleaned over the Sat/Sun when the trains were not running. The reserve set would be standing idle mostly on weekdays so it would be convenient to fit experimental equipment over the working week and then try it out out over the weekend.

I don't remember if any of the snapshots taken on the day clearly show the sides of the stock other than the dynamometer car.
If they do and it is part of a Coronation set the 'Coronation' lettering should stand out even if it cannot be read.

I believe the Hoather images taken on that day do not support the F A S Brown claim.

They clearly show 'Coronation' on the carriage sides.

Unless, those I have are not the record run, given there were a series of brake tests. And when exactly did the tests start, anyone know?

That source was discussed today when I visited the MLS archives at Stockport.

Only two log entries in the Dynamometer Car log book for 4468, one for "Brake Trials" (entry 1639), the second recorded as "High Speed Run" (entry 1640) both dated 3-7-38.

I know this sounds like a dumb question Mike, but this mean that the dynamometer car was only used TWICE?

Presumably, it was used again during the exchange trials but with a different (BR) number?

Maybe only twice with Mallard, but I’m sure the NER didn’t go to the trouble and expense of building it for the benefit of the LNER 25 years in the future.

Its regular use over its career would make an interesting study, I daresay.

Even more interesting if the Car only worked the Summer timetable, when one considers when that applied, especially at the September end of the TT. I am guessing the Spring Timetable would be equally appropriate for the Observation Car, but it did not run.
