Lancashire Branch working

Post by Darwin4975 »

Can anyone confirm that the attached picture was taken on the Oldham branch?

Also any information on the coaches behind the C13 would be of interest, especially the likely livery of these coaches in the mid 1950s.

http://www.ipernity.com/doc/302581/21132603 is worth a look, as I think this shows the other end of this set, or one of identical composition, at Oldham Clegg Street.

My knowledge of Great Central carriages is very limited, but the leading vehicle in the picture you posted seems to have a lot of characteristics in common with GCR 50' London suburban stock. The commode handles and ventilators are particularly distinctive. The sub-division nearest the camera is of interest, as its double doors suggest employment as a luggage compartment.

The farther vehicle has a layout in common with a Gresley Driving Brake Third to Diag. 254.

The Clegg Street shot on the posted link shows BR-style sans serif numbering at the r/h end, so I think the most likely livery is some species of the BR red appropriate for non-gangwayed stock, unless they simply applied a coat of varnish to whatever was the pre-nationalisation livery, as was common with green-painted ex-Southern Railway coaches.

Not sure whether I can detect a '1' class designation on the door of the compartment adjacent to the locker on the leading vehicle in your shot.

Maybe of interest is this enjoyable dvd of the 'Oldham Loop' that features a mixture of 1950s & early 1960s amateur b&w film footage and also contemporary colour film footage as well.

The photo you've posted is taken not too far from Park Bridge. There are a number of views from a similar vantage point in the Foxline Publishing (now part of Booklaw) book entitled DELPH, SADDLEWORTH AND GREENFIELD TO OLDHAM by GODDARD and WELLS.
This books also includes a fair amount of detail about these OA&GB push-pull trains including details of the GC 50' locker composites and the various driving trailers used with them, as well as rather more on the Delph Donkey.
