Thank you everybody for this useful thread. To me one of the attractions (if only for modelling) the ECML and diversionary routes north of York is the running of GW,LMS, and SR (?) stock on through services.

Yes Southern stock could be seen as far north as Newcastle on regular services from Bournemouth.
