D16/3s

Hi
I have just acquired a model of a D16/3 with simplified footplate. I failed to notice that it has the framing under the smoke box as modified for piston valves. This rather limits the choice of prototype and era so.....
1. Which engines were so modified?
2. What were the last survivors?
3. I understand that extra plating was welded onto the existing frames, so is the profile unchanged between the frames allowing me to reprofile them back to the original.
My modelling era is c1957, did any PV engines operate in the Cambridge area?

Any help much appreciated.
Bob

Precious few in that condition still in service throughout 1957, think it is just 4: 62535/68/88/99.

Don't know exactly where these were allocated, but the last of the class were dotted about Norfolk. However, since a D16/3 was reported working an up freight to Ferme Park as late as 1959, (the last 4-4-0 to work in normal service on the ECML) I think you can have a piston valve and no decorative splasher framing example appear at Cambridge, and ask any nasayer to prove you wrong...

Hi Hatfield
Thanks for the reply.
I have now found a pic on line (after a long search) by Geoff Plumb showing 62588 at Cambridge on 23/4/58. The Loco is externally very tidy and an added bonus for me is the livery is unlined black. It should make a nice subject for the model.
Thanks again for your insight.

Such handsome machines, whether as first turned out with progressive improvements from Stratford GER, or subsequently modified by the LNER in varying degree. I am more than a little tempted to obtain a second model and modify it to slide valve and decorative valance condition to represent 62613, last of the class in service, withdrawn from March shed in late 1960.

It is noticeable that the last four survivors that were withdrawn during 1960 were all slide valve machines. Suggestive that while the piston valve locos were superior for power output, this probably reduced frame longevity.

Agreed, very elegant throughout their evolution.
ISTR the piston valves, especially the 9.5” caused cracking of the frames and as you say, reduced their time in service, many seemingly the earlier withdrawals.
I would also like an example with decorative valences but I prefer the more modern appearance without. In this state they look very modern but still graceful.

It’s me again.
I’ve now settled on 62576 as my chosen prototype as it was PV fitted, finished unlined black and I have pics of it in my chosen time frame. The problem for me is all the pics I have are of the rhs and as it stands my model has a large pipe on the lhs of the smoke box which turns 90 degrees down and routes vertically through the footplate. This pipe is present in photos of locos in earlier times but I have not seen this pipe on any pics in BR times. So, what is this pipe for? Was it removed later in the loco’s life?
Any help appreciated.

Would love to do one in GER Blue

As regards the pipe

Have youa ccess to THe RCTS green book volume or Yeadons Tome?

Mine are still waiting to be put back on the bookshelf otherwise i might weel have had the answer for you

If you are a member of the GERS They have a forum for this sort of thing

Good 2021 to all

Thank you Ron for your supportive response.
(Un)fortunately I am in Cyprus so no immediate means of adding a Greenly volume to my stash.
I may have to take this up with the GERS but I’m sure someone here can provide the info.
Happy New Year to you and all forum members

The stout pipe that exits the smokebox hard by the saddle on the LHS on some photos of D16/3s is the shrouding for the steam supply for the exhaust steam injector. These were replaced by live steam injectors from 1945, and the pipe removed. From photographic evidence it looks as if this was done in fairly short order.

Back in 1960 my friend and i bunked Stratford. Still in the 'number taking' phase and without i didn't realise the significance of seeing 62613 and 61668 smokebox to smokebox

Oh that the preservation movement was about then.

However there are plans for a D16 replica but the two B17 are now one following the demise of the 61662 group Out of the two stil going i think the D16 is under good stewardship as most of them on the 'committee are in ther 20s

Your new years resolution is to keep us informed via pictures.

Best Wishes

Ron

Thank you Darryl for your reply, not only is it good to know when changes to external appearance occurred, but also why.
Ron, I think we share the same views about D16s and all things Great Eastern. It would be great to see a Claud run, sadly they were all gone before I really got interested in railways. The B17 is another of my favourites and is a must have even though (like the D16) it can’t really be justified on my branch line layout. When I finish 62576 I will post pics. It may be some time!
All the Best

I am in the process of building a 5in B17. To put it bluntly the tenders of that class are a minefield ( and that excludes the B2 rebuilds) I must have come across at least 5 variations of toolboxes and side sheet arrangements. I have finally found three pictures, luckily 2 are 3/4 views of both sides of the tender i am doing and one is of another B!7 with,i am 99% certain the same build/conversion
The same goes for the Loco frames. There are a few measurements that are not apparent on the model plans ,and the designers has got the rear end incorrect.
Watching Peters build of 4472 made me rethink what i should be doing along with another chap who is doing a GWR 15xx tank, that is going to be a work of art. So a few trips to NRM and works drawings has put me on the right track.May be a bit harder, but it should look nice ( excuse the pun)

Just to give you an idea of my tribulations and privations I am now on my 5th and final tender design and my third build. You find out the model designers do funny shaped tender hornblocks, only discovered on a trip to the NNR for the B12 Tender (NOTHING like a B17!!!) incorrect frame lengths about a ft longer than prototype These only come to light when visiting the NRM and getting works plans, and three loco frames!! first set was buggered when the milling machine cutter decided to do a walkabout when milling the Axlebox cut outs , and the second when i found out the front bogie axle cutout isn't a half circle like most engines lol. Once i get the plans they frames will be as i want them and pics will follow!

Meanwhile a small hint as to what one i am doing and a replica GER Crest as painted by me!!

Jonathan, I am so sorry, I don’t know how I missed your reply so this is a belated thank you. Having opened the link though it looks decidedly like the rhs!
Hope you are keeping well and all the best for 2021.

Hello again Ron
I guess it’s Tottenham Hotspur that you’re building? ISTR it was the only Footballer with the ex GER tender.
However, trying to sort out a tender for my K1, supposedly group standard revealed umpteen variations so you have my sympathy.
I’m also green with envy at your lovely wall decorations and that GER crest is superb.
Best wishes
