A4 twilight in Scotland

Post by Wolfbane »

Hi there, I am researching a possible model railway involving the twilight of the A4s on the Glasgow Aberdeen expresses, and I was wondering what other steam types would be found on those lines or nearby during the period involved? I know the J38s were running in Fife right up to the end of steam, but what else was out there?

A4 twilight in Scotland

A2's 60528, 60530 & 60532 were running the 3-and 4-hour Glasgow-Aberdeen services, right up until 1966

Towards the end, A4's also showed up on the 4-hour runs as well

Riddles and Stanier 5's made appearances on the semi-fasts

I found the following (currently in print) reference material very useful:

'Scottish Steam', W.J. Verden Anderson ISBN 071102992X
'On Scottish Lines', D. Penney ISBN 071102653X
'Steam Colour Portfolio', ScR vol1, K.R. Pirt ISBN 1901945723

Hope that helps - and good luck with the layout

as it happens I just got a DVD on this, and it shows others as well as the A4s, like V2s Black 5s Britannias, and I'll watch it again tomorrow night after Bittern Passes through.

One point of note was a V2 deputising for an A4 on the fish run, where as it took 2 black 5s doing the same run!

I have a photo somewhere of (I think) a J36 hauling coal a few months after steam had officially ended in Scotland.

Ah, here it is (scroll down - it is the colour one of a BR J36 that isn't Maud):

"The last steam working" - that we know about :-)

Thanks one and all. All those J36s are enough to make me go O-Gauge and buy a Connoiseur kit of said loco!

Wow, thanks for that. A nice range of locos and just about all available rtr. I think I will have to get that DVD.

On the diesel side I guess it was the 26 (27?), 25, 29 and such like? But far be it from me to ask a diesel question on this site!

So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?

There are some on the DVD, but I don't identify very well, I class most bonneted diesels as deltics!

Twilight of the A4s

Post by duncan_am_smith »

www.locosheds.co.uk is a gold-mine of information. Sheds are listed alphabetically; for each, you'll find steam and diesel allocations, by year

The BRCW type 2's paired up on the Edinburgh-Aberbeen services, until displaced by type 4 haulage

Perth-based NBL type 2s would have appeared on the old Caley line to Aberdeen; also, in later years, BRCW and BR/Sulzer type 2's worked along the line and its tributaries

NBL 0-4-0 shunters proliferated on yard and short trip workings

Wolfsbane - If you're still mulling over this topic, see if you can lay your hands on a copy of the truly excellent "Memories of Steam from Glasgow to Aberdeen" (author Michael S Welch; ISBN 1-870754-37-9)

t was published in 1993 and I've just procured a copy. It's a treasure-trove of photos and service timings; highly recommended
