photos of 60079 with double chimney

Post by JASd17 »

I have recently been sent a photo of 60079 at Haymarket fitted with a double chimney.

Nothing remarkable in that, except that it is carrying a round dome boiler.

There is some confusion about the classification of the nine Thompson round dome boilers in RCTS Part 2A, the boiler table (p45) shows them as Diagram 94HP, whereas in 2 captions they are referred to as Thompson 94A, this was not corrected in Part 11, so which classification is correct? This might allow the summary table at the rear of Part 2A to be correct, in showing 94A.

In Yeadon's register 60079 is shown as running with only one boiler when it had a double chimney, a Diagram 94A No. 27026, I have seen photos of 60079 running with a steam collector boiler also fitted with a double chimney. It therefore appears there was an unrecorded change of boiler at some point, or is the date of fitting of the double chimney not correct (given as 1/1960)?

A small point, but I hope one that somebody can help with.

'Peter Coster’s book on the A3’s confirms that 60079 had its double chimney fitted during its casual repair at Doncaster, between 6th and 18th April 1959. He even shows a photo of it recently ex works at Haymarket (double chimney, 94HP 27000 boiler with round dome) on May 3rd 1959'.

The above came from Kingfisher24 all the way from NZ. It shows that several sources have an incorrect date for the fitting of the double chimney to 60079, not least RCTS Part 2A, in the second impression copy I have dated 1978.
