Fowler 4F in LNE region?

Post by JFH »

Does anyone know whether Fowler 4F 0-6-0s from LMS ever worked in the NE region, either before nationalisation or afterwards?

I'm not quite sure what part of the NER system you were thinking of, however, they certainly occasionally worked across the Stainmore route covering for the unavailability of other power. I have a picture of 43922 at Winston heading towards Darlington in 1959. Summer appearances in Scarborough are quite well documented as well, even one tackling the Up Scarborough Flyer!!

Often seen at Driffield on seaside specials from the West Riding during my spotting days from 1955 to 1966. Usually coming from the Market Weighton direction.

There's even a colour pic of a 4F with LMS carriages departing Scarborough in August 1938. ('Big Four in Colour', an endlessly useful collection.)
The 'entanglement' of the LMS and LNER from London to Scotland made such operations inevitable.

Admittedly miles from the NE but they used to visit Sandy on the ex GN section, coming across from the Midland (Bedford) on the Oxford to Cambridge (Varsity) line.

Thanks to all for this info, very helpful! I was mostly thinking of NE north of Newcastle, but this info helps a lot for further south...
