Bittern broke all known records, and arrived in York, an hour...I said an HOUR EARLY!
Even though we were ready, I was still miffed about Duchess of Sutherland Leaving when I had the video set ever since it arrived, and still running for when it left, as soon as it moved some one gets in my shot!
So I was watching the film again when...it's here...AGHHHHHH!
I never managed a photo of her coming in, but after turning on the triangle, she backed through the station.

And as she changed places with the Duke, here is his departing shot.

So the plaques from 4468 and 60007 are to be removed?

Yeh, and they record the trip from Kings Cross to York?

For the record it should have been 6 hours 6 mins including
6 mins in Peterborough
51 mins in Peterborough Yard for water
28 mins at Retford NDS
56 mins at Doncaster RMT for water

Acctually it took 5 hours and 3 mins

It left at 06:48, to arrive at 13:18 a running time of 3 hours 45 mins discounting stops

it arrived at 12:15 so in theory discounting stops also, it took 2 hours 42

No, they commemorate absolute and (IIRC) post-war steam speed records respectively. Which would presumably fall into the category you mentioned of "all known records".

If it's approximately 190 miles from King's Cross to York (it was 188 in LNER days, but I presume the Selby deviation has extended the distance and I don't have a Sectional Appendix handy today to check the current mileage), a running time of 2h 42m gives an average speed of around 70mph. This is creditable, certainly, for such a venerable machine but not really record-shattering stuff, unless the overall average is composed of a combination of periods of sustained low-speed and unusually high speed operation. It would be interesting to know, especially since Bittern is restricted by Group Standard GO/RT3440 to a maximum speed of 75mph.

Anyway, it must have been stirring stuff and I'd very much like to have seen (and heard) it.

(Later edit: 71000 is a fine-looking machine, too. Not sure that I like the cast numerals on the cabside, though).

I know what they commemorate!

The last we heard was that it was 3/4 hour ahead, then it crept in, as I wasn't watching, and two blokes had planted themselves infront of our cameras, and they were just watching, not photographing!

As for the picture of the duke, I am also filming at the same time, and that is 2 of 2 1/2 I got (the 3rd was half gone behind the wall!) and if you watch the film, it is one single blast that, either side of it was quite plain in compasrison!

BTW, when peole use Acronyms, sometimes you have to put it in Google to remember what it means!

Guard your patch better next time. After all (ahem) - once Bittern, twice shy, eh?

Well, today was the return leg, the Duke of Gloucestershire from Glasgow to York (setting off 15 mins late, and arriving 58 late!)

Anyhow, we chased it down to the end of 10, by standing on 9, then a Voyager to Bournmouth passed in between us, and when it cleared, something magical happened, when Bittern crept up.
