The Springbok Plaque
This was allegedly given to the engine by a Bloemfontein newspaper proprietor in the early 50's and carried by the engine ever since except during her stint as Osprey.

I always wondered what it was, but didn't think of it as a springbok due to the wings! and it is only on the one side, and also after seeing it loads of times, it is only this year I have seen it close up, and realised it is stood proud of the engine!
I did however realise it was the coat of arms, which is why the builders plate is on the inside

I am going out tomorrow to get some new glasses, I have seen UoSA several times over the years, and have never even noticed the crest before!
It has passed my house twice in the last few weeks, so here are a couple of pictures I took of it passing our place, the head on shot was taken from the bottom of our garden, and you can just make out the springbok plaque on the boiler.

Quite a good video clip, you were right about the smoke and the slipping.
I seem to remember that northbound starts were often difficult at York in steam days because of the curvature of the platform causing the flanges on the coaches to bind.
I remember once when I was very young, watching a pacific, possibly an A1, having real trouble. The driver had set back slightly to get water so the couplings were all tight, and that coupled with greasy rails meant that he needed many attempts to get away. I can remember the incredible noise and the sight of red hot cinders shooting up into the air as he slipped. At least he caught it, and did not do a "Blue Peter"!

The broken 60009 was towed down to the NRM last Sunday due in at 20:30 (weel I didn't see it) UKsteam has it down for 00:20 arrival, reports have it as 02:19 it was towed behind 66110 at a steady 35mph and ran hot again.
She was supposed to make it too Crewe, but didn't, and is sat in the NRM work shop as we speak

By chance I saw it pass my house last Sunday being towed backwards by the 66. There were people on the footplate looking anxiously at the trailing axle. it seemed ok at that point but will only have covered about 35 miles then. I think that it was stopped at Newcastle for attention.
Of course I had only just put my camera away when it came past!
