B1 61008 - Please help...

Post by tidybrown »

Hi All, I am in desperate need of help! It is my bosses 50th birthday on the 15th of April - he is from Grimsby originally and has a keen interest in Steam Locomotives - we are trying to find a Steam Engine that would have run on the line through Grimsby in 1956, and ultimately then will will try to buy a 00 Guage model of it! So far I have been advised to buy a:

B1 61008 'KUDU' (BR No.8309) - Bachmann make a weathered version

Can anyone tell me if this sounds about right, or if they have any better ideas PLEASE let me know ASAP!

Does anyone know about 'the Grimsby fish' a regular run to London?

Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks - Chris

Chris

I don't have much info outside East Anglia, but B-1 61008 Kudu was allocated to East Anglia sheds (Parkeston and Stratford) from at least 1948-1955.

In Gavin Morrisons book "The Eastern & North Eastern Then & Now" there is a photo of Grimsby Town on 13 October 1956 with Class B-1 61205 on the 12.15pm train to King's Cross (via Boston). At that time I think the loco was allocated to Peterbough New England shed.

Try the Great Northern Railway Society and the Great Central Railway Society. I'm not sure if the GCRS has a web site but the GNRS has:

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Chris,

The nearest steam shed to Grimsby was probably Immingham 40B and so I expect that your boss would be pleased to have a locomotive that was allocated to that shed. I have also shown the allocation to Lincoln below.

It is important that you establish what period your boss is interested in. Is he a British Railways enthusiast for the 1950s and early sixties, or alternatively is he a fan of the LNER pre 1948, or some other period? On the balance of probability, I will assume that he is interested in the 1950s/early sixties.

The locomotives allocated to Immingham and Lincoln sheds were:

Whilst you can buy B1s, K3s, Ivatt 4s, J39s, and WDs from Bachmans and the J94s from Hornby, I don't think that you can buy the exact ones with the right numbers as allocated to either of these sheds. However it is a fairly simple job for a skilful modeller to renumber a loco. I would therefore suggest that you buy him any of the above in BR black, except the Ivatt 4 with the double chimney.

As regards the Grimsby fish trains, I would expect them to be pulled by an Immingham K3. The Bachman K3 is a superb model and runs very well indeed.

If your boss is an LNER fan, ask me again.

hi

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/david.enefer has pictures of trains from all over the north lincolnshire area, including grimsby and grimsby docks. these are fair quality and have the engine types and running numbers below the pictures. this is only a small website and appears to be run by an individual enthusiast who appears to have a keen interest in the area you are looking for.

Flying scotsman even made a passing visit in 69, and there appear to have been a wide variety of locomotives working the line.

hope this helps
James :)

According to my father the Grimsby Fish trains where mainly 9f (mainly BR 1F tender & double chimney) hauled in the late 50's. K3's LMS 8f's, crabs and 4F 0-6-0's could sometimes be seen also.

Hornby recently produced a weathered J94 with high bunker and a 40B immingham shed plate. Immingham being the local shed. I have this model but it is currently on loan to my father so will have to check the number later.

I have a bachmann model of 61003 Gazelle which was allocated to 40b Immingham for a time. The shedplate would need changing though. Replica Railways have in the past produce a model of B1 61026 Ourebi with a 40A lincoln Shedplate. This was at one time a 40B Immingham loco and would have no doubt hauled the Grimsby to London trains before the arrival of the Britannias.

Speaking of Brittanias no.s 70036 to 70041 where allocated to immingham for a couple of years before diesels took over the London trains. Hornby have produced 70036 Boadicea, 70038 robin Hood & 70040 Clive of India.
