LH / RH Drive

Post by cooperajn »

Inspired by a question to the GW Group -
Which LNER con stituents were LH drive?

The LNER became LH, though I believe the GN was RH as some A3s remained RH until late LNER/early BR days.

I have an idea the NE was LH, other than that??

In accordance with the great British tradition, our railways run on the left and originally drivers sat on the right. However as locomotive boilers got larger, it became more difficult for the drivers to the see the signals which were situated beside the track. The firemen had to be relied on to spot the signals on occasions.

Eventually, despite opposition from the older drivers, the benefits of driving on the LHS became recognised and the change was made accordingly as new locomotives were introduced. However many old small boilered locomotives were never changed.

Wasn't this one of the things that McDonnell tried to change on the NER?
