On my last but one visit to Shildon,
there was a very nicely restored 20ton NER hopper in grey, right next to Platform 7 (the cafe)
They're very big......

To go back to the original question, there is a photo of "Barber" at Bilton awaiting transport to Leeds in 1957 on the South Tynedale RPS site:

This shows several steel hoppers on the standard gauge. The line had closed by then, so it may be that these were not being used to carry coal for the Gas Works. All the earlier photos I have seen at Bilton show wooden hoppers. These would appear to have been in use until the late 1940s / early 1950s at least.

I would suggest having a look on the rmweb site. I'm interested in the 20 tonners you will find some excellent articles and pics. I'm also interested the smaller round end hoppers especially those used on the lambton system and when you start looking it gets deeper and deeper. I have a rake of the obligatory Slaters kits and am about to start a whitemetal 10 ton roundend hopper-Si
