Does anyone recognise this vehicle?

Post by Flamingo »

In times gone by when there were plenty of loco-hauled trains to ride and photograph in the snow I used to make regular winter trips to Scotland. On one such trip, February 1986, we saw this unusual wooden-bodied yellow departmental vehicle at Perth station. It had a kind of 'East Coast' look about it but had clearly been much modified. The body was both narrower and shorter than the underframe so I'm guessing that these two components did not start life together. In the picture it is about to be hauled away by one of the local class 08 shunters which has some kind of badge on the side.

Can anyone add furher details? Sorry I did not note the numbers of either the 08 or the vehicle in question.
ID anyone please?

Looks like an ex TPO van but there is not enough to be able to identify with any certainty.

Yes I do, Its an exLNER BTK converted to a breakdown train tool van. One end was reduced in width though retaining its original roof. Asteel frame was built inside to take a trolley to move the crane lifting tackle to to its storage areas inside. There was open verandars at either end for loading. some of the original panels and frameing survived at the brake end. It was scrapped at Boness in the late ninetees i think (Wavey may give a more acurate date). The underframe is now at the NYMR and is to be used with the LNERCA's ECJS third diner No189. Parts of the original panels and frame also survive. I know because i helped dismantle it.

This was a Dia 40 BTK built at Doncaster in 1926. Original number 62540 (later 16175) and finally ADE 320692 in departmental days. It was broken up in 2001 and the underframe retained.

Further info at:

As can be seen not much of the original body remained. The underframe will be stripped of the floor timbers (which are being recycled) and shortened for use under ECJS 189 eventually.
