I have an LNER builder's plate: 8559, Darlington Works 1921, which a friend gave over twenty years ago. All my searching for any information, even engine class, has proved fruitless.
Can any kind person shed any light on this plate's provenance?

The NER produced a new style of numberplate in 1917 with exactly the style of lettering shown as on your example, but of course with North Eastern Railway across the top.
This plate was 9" long by 5" deep.
This style of plate was adopted after 1923 for use on all LNER locomotives but with the name of the new company. Yours appears to be one of these.
The problem is that LNER loco No. 8559 was an ex-GER Class B12 4-6-0 and so to have acquired a Darlington works plate, it would have had to be put through a foreign works due to lack of capacity at Stratford, the ex-GER works. For example, the B12s were rebuilt by the LNER from 1932 with parallel boilers. It could have received its plate at this time.
There may be a record of this works visit in Yeadons book on the B12s.
After 1946, this number was allocated to an ex-GER 0-6-0T loco of class J69.
Alternatively, it could be a plate off a tender or some other item of rolling stock.
