Spotting logs wanted!

I am looking for people to send me spotting logs from anytime prior to 1997 - preferably the age of steam, but any will be great. I will put them on my website with an acknowledgment and then we can build up a picture of what was seen where and when. Take a look at these examples to see what I mean: http://brdatabase.info/timelines.php?page=workings

To qualify, the log needs three simple ingredients: a location, a date and loco number(s). Please either send them to me via this forum or on the website submission page: http://brdatabase.info/contact.php

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Ian

Helloooooo...

<tumbleweed rolls across the screen>

Can anyone help with this?! Photocopies, spreadsheets, text files, word documents: any lists of locos seen on visits prior to 1997 would be most welcome.

Hi Chamossaire,
I posted some logs on the thread below - take a look. If these are of interest then I can provide a few more.

Hi Ian,

I have sent a message via the web page contact form but I got some form of error message in return and I am not sure that you have received it.

I have a list of steam locos at Stratford shed and works for 4/10/1959. A few of the numbers may no longer be legible, as it's in pencil, but the classes are certainly identifiable. It separates the locos at the Old Works, but otherwise I'm afraid the shed and works aren't distinguished. (The two were mixed together anyway - the most complex of all the works sites, imo, with running lines everywhere.)

Hi Kudu,

sounds good to me - can you get them scanned ? I'll PM you with an email address if you can.

I think it would be best if I typed out the list. I could post it here or send you a Word file. The latter would be easier for you to handle, I guess.

Let me know your preference.

Hi Kudu, sorry, wasn't being rude (not deliberately) - missed your reply. Posting here is fine - I'll cut and paste.

Cheers!

Now I'm ex-Works (see separate thread) I can start posting again, so here's the Stratford list as promised. Only one number is not fully decipherable. The allocations given were listed at the time. One or two might be out of date ie just before a reallocation I didn't know about. 176 locos in all. For some reason Departmentals aren't listed - I don't know why.

If anyone is interested I have logs from early 1960...mainly Scotland, including works and scraplines/yards and Summer holiday trips to Blackpool/Preston/Man Vic, Scarborough/Bridlington/York from the early 60s.

I spotted in Perth from mid 1960 for 4 or 5 years but never kept logs except cops.

While looking through my Lincolnshire spotting notes for 1968 over the weekend (45 years seems a very long time away, now), I came across an oddity, and don't know if anyone has any connection with Lincoln depot in those days, but it would be interesting if they do.

The Derby/Rolls Royce 2-car dmu nos E50000 and E56000 are listed as withdrawn Oct 1967 in the Railway Observer and not surprisingly on Wikipedia, and that particular unit disappeared from the following years' ABC. I have no reason to suspect that was not the case.

However, I have them down as passing our back garden, between Sleaford and Boston, three times over the Whitsun holidays:- on 29th and 30th May, and again on 4th June 1968, seven months after withdrawal.

One sighting could be put down to bad eyesight, but three separate days seems a little too many, and my eyesight was excellent in those days. Also. I could tell that unit from the others, not just with the numbers but because there were no gear changes as it accelerated away from the station stop.

I wonder if Lincoln was a bit short of dmus during that holiday period, and pressed everything into service - withdrawn or not, because it was only the non-standard engine and transmission that sealed its fate originally. I don't think it was unserviceable.

Anyway, if someone has any corroborating evidence I would be very pleased to see it.

A chap i knew had some logs nad was adamant that they are useless so he would burn them. I managed to photocopy one book from 1966.And one ay found out they went back to 1922!!! Mostly LNWR/LMS/BR but he did go on shed trips country wide

As it happens the threat never materialised and i now have them. There are big gaps in the war/pre war years ,as his parents donated them to the 'war effort' when he was away fighting the hun. But he was UK landbased in the RAF and has many logs of his travels to/from various airfields.

One day i will finish the spreadsheet of all spreadsheets

Wow, that sounds great.

My father was a keen trainspotter in the 1930s, but his notes were thrown out while he was away during WW2. I always find this very depressing, as pre-war spotting notes would have been priceless, especially as he lived by the M&GN and would have seen many of their older locomotives which seemed to be quite a random collection.

I have seen a few sets of notes on the internet from around 1936, but I think they might have been on the old Fotopic site and vanished with it.

I have quite a lot from the 1950s/60s but they are in faded pencil and take a good deal of effort to transcribe.
