I am currently setting out on a new modelling adventure based on the GCR at its northern most reaches and was wundering which of the ex-LNER 2-8-0s and 0-8-0s worked through to the 1950s. I am basing the shed on leeds neville hill and would also like to know the shed code. Thanks for any help Tom

I'm not sure about shed allocations, but the Gresley O3 (ex-O1) and Thompson O1s were around in the 50s. Also, the O6s and O7s were still around, although BR may have re-classified them?

O6 = Stanier 8F
O7 = Riddles WD Austerity 2-8-0

The shed associated with Leeds Central Station was Copley hill.

The locoshed Index (http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~luigi ... coshed.htm) gives the allocation:

37B LEEDS (COPLEY HILL) (1952)

60114 60118 60119 60120 60125 60133 60134 60139 60141 60826
60846 60861 60865 60913 61129 61295 61309 61377 61386 61387
64173 64276 64277 67353 67372 68911 68913 68925 68937 68978
68984 68988 69266 69430 69436 69437 69440 69444 69446 69450
69471 69473 69483

As Leeds Central was a Great Northern station originally, there were lots of GN engines still there in 1952, including J6s, J50s, N1s and C12s.

Neville Hill was an ex NER shed and had lots of B1s, B16s, two Q6s, J39s, N10s and so on in 1955

50B LEEDS (NEVILLE HILL)

60036 60074 60081 60084 60086 61017 61035 61062 61065 61069
61086 61216 61218 61237 61240 61256 61257 61259 61410 61411
61412 61413 61414 61415 61425 61427 61428 61429 61431 61432
61433 61440 61442 61446 61447 61469 61470 61471 62397 62742
62748 62764 62775 63348 63436 64758 64791 64835 64860 64863
64886 64920 64933 64934 64935 64943 65650 65654 67262 67266
67274 67290 68395 68672 69098 69114 69117 69119 69858 69882

Typical eight coupled locos in the area were WDs and 8Fs. The Q6s shared the Hull and Selby traffic to Leeds with the Selby allocation of similar locos.

Barnsley, 41G, would be a good choice if you want to model an ex-GCR shed in the West Riding.

In 1959 there were allocated twenty O4s, seven J11s, two C14s and six N5s. The only interloipers were just two J39s.

I have a copy of Petewr Wallers "Celebration of Steam - West Riding, published by Ian Allan. This is an excellent 114 page book packed with photographs that are full of grimy industrial industrial scenes. It is to be recommended.

I particularly like the photo on page 11 of the Great Northern Link from Laisterdyke to Bradford Northern Exchange. The photo shows a passenger train double headed by a J39 and a B1 in a deep curving cutting, with high vertical stone and natural rock walls. Buildings crowd the cutting and there are even two end of terrace houses that are supported by piers of stone projecting from the retaining wall. This location would be make an ideal prototype and an excellent way of leading the tracks of an oval layout into a fiddle yard.

On the back of the cover there is a further photograph taken in the opposite direction with a type 2 diesel double heading a Fairburn 2-6-4T with lots of clag.

The O4's I suspect would run in to Stafford during the Twenties & Thirties via the old Great Northern line from Derby. However my farther can remember a regular visiting O4 at Alsager shed on a saturday night /sunday waiting to take a munitions train from Radway Green. This was in the late 50's early 60's . I have the suspicion that the Loco was 63859.

Don't know much, but I'm running an 8F/06 3107 on my railway, and with the small wheels, it runs slower, and seems to give better grip, but does derail reversing over certain points.
As I speek however, I have it on my coaches, Mallard is on the goods!
3107 spent time at York and Heaton .
3107 was built in July 1944 as number 7658, was renumbered 3107 in April 1946, and renumbered 3507 in March 1947, and was returned to the LMS in October 1947 as 8712, then BR 48712 in January 1950
