IIRC, Grand Parade was involved in the Castlecary accident of 1936/7 (?) when striking miners (?) removed a rail from a main line and derailed the train it was hauling. I think casualties were far lighter than the pictures would suggest but the loco was badly damaged and although it was 'rebuilt' at Doncaster it was actually a new build from spare parts. We had a discussion about that process last year some time. If I can locate a source this morning I'll refresh my memory and add some more detail.

Grand Parade was, indeed, involved in the accident at Castlecary on 10th December 1937 but it was nothing to do with striking miners. Her train, a Waverley to Queen Street express, passed a signal at danger in poor weather conditions and collided with the rear end of a stationary Dundee to Queen Street train. 35 people were killed. The smashed Gresley teak coaches in the picture have telescoped over the tender.jwealleans wrote:IIRC, Grand Parade was involved in the Castlecary accident of 1936/7 (?) when striking miners (?) removed a rail from a main line and derailed the train it was hauling.
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?
