Tonight's Look North has just had a feature on the discovery of the original cab sides, showing the numbers and NER crest from the electric loco 62501.
They had been found in a garden at a pub in Choppington and are not in too bad condition considering the length of time they have been there.

Oh fantastic! What great news, I really hope they go on public display. Some sources say 26501 was the subject of attempted preservation before it was scrapped, does anyone know who attempted to preserve it?

Probably the same guy who buried the cabside sheets at the bottom of the pub garden....

Ha! Well, to be fair, probably more starting material here than that needed to start most replica projects.... so let's go for it!

And built to the Tyne and Wear Metro voltage? A quick trip round the coast I think would be in order or a piccy at SG sheds.

Over 40 years ago, I heard a talk by a former curator of the Science Museum in Exhibition Park. He said that when he started the job in the 1960s, he had discovered in the card index that the museum owned a loco. He asked where it was and told that it was at the rail depot. He went there excited to see it. Staff at the depot remembered that it had been stored there for a while, but had then been taken away to be cut up. No one had realised that it now belonged to the museum. I presume that the loco was 26501.
